Carunculated Caracara

Caracaras are members of the falcon family that scavenge for a living like vultures. This one was seen in paramo habitat (high treeless plain) on the west side of the Andes east of Quito. The bodies tend to look black, but lightening the shadows brought out a bluish tint on the body, although not on the head.
