After the brief visit to Darwin, we began our complex journey back to Quito for our last night in Ecuador before returning to the U.S. It began with a taxi ride to the bus station where our luggage was waiting. We took a 45 minute bus ride across Santa Cruz Island, then took a quaint outboard ferry across the narrow straight separating Santa Cruz and Baltra Islands. We then took another short bus ride to the airport. When we arrived in Quito after a rain delay, we discovered that the road up the mountain to the San Jorge Ecolodge was washed out. After some hasty repairs made by shoveling mud and rocks into the washout, our bus barely made it. At San Jorge, there was no electricity. After a hot meal eaten by firelight and candlelight, we packed by candlelight and flashlight. Following a cold, dark night, we left for the airport before dawn without breakfast.
