Mainland Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands

Fifteen scenic digital photos from a trip in 2006. These photos are also in my Mainland Ecuador and Galapagos photographic trip reports.

Mountain of the Lonely Tree This photo shows a view from the San Jorge Eco-lodge looking east across the valley that contains Quito. The mountain is a dormant volcano. It was taken on Feb 27, 2006. Mountain of the Lonely Tree This photo is a more zoomed in view of the mountain that better shows the lonely tree. I was told that the tree is a eucalyptus, a non-native species that is abundant in the Quito area. The photo was taken on March 1, 2006. Road to the Falls This photo shows the cloud forest habitat along the unpaved road that runs from Mindo, Ecuador to the Mindo-Nambillo Preserve. It was taken March 1, 2006.
Waterfall at Mindo-Nambillo Preserve This photo was taken on March 1, 2006 while leaning out of a primitive cable car that crosses the gorge. Tree in the Mist This photo was taken at the Yanacocha Reserve near Quito on March 3, 2006 in highland rain forest habitat at an altitude of 12,000 feet. Tandayapa Valley The peaks in the background are extinct volcanos. Photo taken March 4, 2006.
Tandayapa Valley This is another view showing the unpaved road we came on. It's just a narrow ledge cut in the side of a cliff. It wasn't wide enough for two vehicles to pass each other. Photo taken March 4, 2006. Sea Turtle Track Although this pattern in the sand looks like it could have been made by a vehicle with treads, it is actually a track made by a female sea turtle that was either going to or coming from her nest site on the beach. This photo was taken on Santa Cruz Island, the Galapagos on March 5, 2006. Vegetation This photo shows the scrubby desert vegetation on Santa Cruz Island, the Galapagos on March 5, 2006.
Cactus This photo shows a close-up of a tree cactus taken on Santa Cruz Island, the Galapagos on March 5, 2006. Although there were many spines, they were soft and hair-like, presumably because the cactus had no need to defend itself against grazers. A Forest of Tree Cacti This photo shows a whole forest of tree cacti on Santa Fe Island, the Galapagos on March 6, 2006. I thought it was one of the most unearthly sights I've ever seen. I suspect there is nothing else quite like it on Earth. Blowhole The pressure of waves caused water to spray forcefully from this hole in the lava on Española Island, the Galapagos on March 7, 2009.
Devil's Crown This photo was taken near Floreana Island, the Galapagos on March 8, 2006. The so-called Devil's Crown is actually the top of an undersea volcano. It is a popular spot for diving and snorkeling. Puerto Ayora Sunrise This photo was taken at Puerto Ayora Harbor, Santa Cruz Island, the Galapagos on March 9, 2006. It is a composite of two partially overlapping hand-held exposures. Puerto Ayora Harbor Panorama This is a panoramic view of Puerto Ayora Harbor, Santa Cruz Island, the Galapagos taken shortly after sunrise from our boat on March 9, 2006. It is a composite made from three partially overlapping hand-held exposures.
