Western New York State

Thirty-four digital and film photos from the area where I now live. They are organized by season, starting with winter, and they include such famous places as Letchworth State Park and Watkins Glen State Park. There are additional scenic photos from western New York State in my Thousand Acre Swamp and Erie Canal galleries.

Mysterious Obelisk  This photo shows a thin slab of ice embedded vertically in snow that was catching the rays of the early morning sun near my Brighton home on Feb 16, 2008.
Irondequoit Bay West Jetty  This photo was taken on Feb 17, 2007. The ice fall on the tower is due to waves breaking over the tower. Note the numerous waterfowl. Icy Jetty  This jetty with ice-encrusted rocks and willow trees that were turning green in spite of having ice-encrusted trunks was photographed at Hamlin Beach State Park on March 15, 2009. A Cold Bud for You  These ice-covered maple buds were photographed near my Brighton home on April 4, 2003 after a bad ice storm. They survived, and a few days later, they were putting out copious amounts of pollen.
Downtown Rochester Panorama  This is a panoramic view of downtown Rochester, NY made from Cobbs Hill Park on April 29, 2010.  It was made by combining four  partially overlapping hand-held exposures.  To scroll through the image, click on it and hold, then drag left or right. Blue Mountain Summit Scene  This photo shows a view from the summit of Blue Mountain in the Adirondacks.  We climbed the steep trail on foot on June 22, 2010, a very warm day. Blue Mountain Panorama  This photo shows a panoramic view from the summit of Blue Mountain in the Adirondacks.  It was made by combining two partially overlapping hand-held exposures made on June 22, 2010.  Alas, the view is spoiled by a cell tower.
Fireflies in a Garden  This photo was taken in a private garden in Henrietta, NY near Rochester on June 29, 2016.  The most obvious fireflies are the streaks of light made by flying ones, but I can count 12 including ones that are stationary.  This was a 4 second time exposure made at 9:30 PM after sunset. Brighton Fireworks  This photo shows a bit of the fireworks display in the town of Brighton, NY on July 4, 2016. Layers  This photo was taken at Watkins Glen State Park on Aug 9, 2007.

Gorge at Letchworth State Park  This photo shows the Genesee River Gorge at Letchworth State Park just below the Upper Falls on July 12, 2007. If this photo reminds you of the Grand Canyon, the gorge is sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the East.  It also reminds me of the "Layers" photo taken at Watkins Glen State Park. Quaker Pond  This photo shows part of Quaker Pond, one of the glacial ponds at Mendon Ponds Park. It was taken on Nov 5, 2008. Rochester Panorama  This photo shows a view from the 6th floor of the University of Rochester Medical School on Oct. 26, 2006. It was made by combining 5 individual partially overlapping hand-held exposures taken with a point-and-shoot camera. The photos were taken through the glass of a not very clean window that couldn't be opened. The dome of the university's Rush-Rhees Library is at the left. Downtown Rochester is at the right. A Sea of Goldenrod  This photo shows a view along the Southern Meadows Trail at Mendon Ponds Park near Rochester, NY on Sep. 9, 2014 when the meadows appeared to be a sea of goldenrods in flower. An Island in a Sea of Goldenrod  This photo shows an island of asters in a sea of goldenrods.  It was taken on Sep. 9, 2014 along the Southern Meadows Trail at Mendon Ponds Park near Rochester, NY. Erie Canal Sunset  This photo shows the view from the South Clinton Ave. bridge over the Erie Canal in Brighton near Rochester looking towards the southeast.  It was taken on Oct. 6, 2006 near sunset a few years before the view was ruined by a development called the Reserve at Brighton.  The Winton Rd. bridge is visible in the distance, about 1 mile away.
Moonrise at Buckland Park  This photo shows the full moon rising over an old silo in Brighton, NY on Oct. 6, 2006.  The photo was taken from Buckland Park, a then new multiuse park built on the site of former cow pastures.  Personally, I prefered the cow pastures with their grassland birds to the new park.
