6Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) This Barnacle Goose, Branta leucopsis, (right) is a Eurasian species that was photographed at a farm pond in the town of Greece near Rochester, NY on Aug 31, 2003. It was in a flock with about 200 Canada geese. The Barnacle Goose had a band on one leg. It is impossible to know for sure if it was a stray wild bird or an escaped domestic bird.
7Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) This Canada Goose, Branta canadensis, was apparently standing guard while his mate sat on a nest nearby at Thousand Acre Swamp in Penfield, NY on May 6, 2013. This is a high dynamic range photo made by combining 3 separate exposures. Thousand Acre Swamp is a preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy.
8Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) Pair with Goslings This pair of Canada Geese, Branta canadensis, with 2 goslings was photographed at Way Pond in Thousand Acre Swamp, Penfield, NY on May 9, 2009. Every spring for many years, Canada Geese have attempted to nest at Way Pond, but the goslings are almost always eaten by snapping turtles. In this case, the remaining goslings might have been big enough to survive. Thousand Acre Swamp is a preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy.
